Frequently Asked Questions

The matter of greatest concern, and causing confusion for members currently, is the major revamp to the telephone network being underaken by BT. This new network goes by the name BT 21CN and will cause significant issues for the manufacturers, suppliers and users of all types of equipment attaching to the PSTN (public switched telephone network).

The most common questions are noted below - for more specific queries contact us directly or speak to the manufacturer/s of your community alarm or telecare equipment.

Please note that fire alarm systems connected to the PSTN may also be affected.

Q.   What is BT 21CN and where can I find more information?

A.   According to BT's website (http://www.btplc.com/21CN/Whatis21CN/index.htm)

21CN is: "BT's next generation network - an advanced communications network for the future."

Q.   Will BT 21CN affect my community alarm equipment?

A.  There is likely to be some impact on the performance of some warden-call and telecare equipment depending on the manufacturer, make and age of the equipment. The manufacturer of the equipment should provide you with written information indicating the precise position relating to their products.

Q.   All of my equipment was supplied by the market leading company - Tunstall Telecom - so do I need to worry about BT 21CN?

A. Yes! Although none of Tunstall's equipment has failed the compliancy test, some items are recorded as being subject to "partial fail"; these items must be upgraded, replaced or taken out of service prior to the introduction of BT 21CN.
